UMPIRE GED CURRAN SELECTED FOR LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS
There was good news for one Scot just after Christmas when Dundonian Ged Curran was informed that he had been selected to umpire hockey at the London 2012 Olympics.
Ged started his Hockey at St John's High School in 1979, as a 12 year old, then played for Lawside FP before moved to Dundee Wanderers, playing in a variety of positions from goalkeeper to left wing, midfield and eventually left back
In 1992 he went to a Menzieshill Indoor Tournament at the Dick McTaggart Sports Centre and due to shortage of umpires and, having do some Club umpiring, he offered to help out and it was there that former Olympic Umpire Craig Madden told Ged he though he had a future as an umpiring.
At the age of 25 he began to umpire regularly in the National leagues, Outdoor and Indoor, though still playing for Moray House College in Edinburgh where he was a PE student.
In 1995 Ged umpired his first outdoor international match in Genoa and has now umpired 95 Senior International matches which included at four Champions Trophy tournaments, doing the Finals at Lahore, Melbourne and Mönchengladbach.
He also umpired finals of both Champions Challenge 2 in Dublin and Champions Challenge 1 in December at Johannesburg, was reserve umpire for outdoor World Cup Final in New Delhi in 2010 and umpired the final of the Indoor World Cup in Poznan last year.
Looking back on what has been a very successful umpiring career Ged is well aware of those who have been major influences including umpires Frank Moran from Dundee Wanderers, Craig Madden and Norrie Urquhart, Henrik Ehlers from Denmark, Clive McMurray in South Africa, Don Prior from Australia and Ray O'Connor from Ireland.
Another key factor for Ged has been the support he has had from Dundee City Council Education Department, Fiona McLagan the new head teacher at St John's RC, where Ged is Principal Teacher of Physical Education, and her predecessor George Haggarty, plus the St John's PE department staff for their continued support. And above all to his wife Ali and children Molly, Mark and Paul for putting up with his continued absences from home

UDP takes to the Three Kings Tournament
The Three Kings tournament in Barcelona was the recent venue for the latest practical meeting of the UDP. Some of the members of group 4 and 5, under the guidance of mentors Jean Duncan and Claire Kelly, were privileged enough to experience the impressive surroundings of Club de Polo for this annual competition.
Taking place between the 5th and 8th of January, we each took charge of a number of matches throughout the weekend, and were paired with other developing umpires from both England and Spain. Each of us experienced the various levels of hockey that the tournament had to offer, with both junior boys and girls and senior mens and womens games being held at the same time.
Socially, there was time to get to know each other, and the other umpires, during a trip to the city for some local culinary delights on Friday, and during the tournament dinner on the Saturday evening. We were also lucky enough to spend an hour in the company of FIH president Leandro Negre who discussed with us the various developments taking place within the organisation from an umpiring perspective.
Altogether it was a rewarding experience with each of us taking away some helpful tips on where we can improve. Many thanks to Jean and Claire for their time, advice and patience throughout the tournament.

Horgan named USA Field Hockey National Umpire Director
Increasing number of umpires a key priority in new full time role
COLORADO SPRINGS, C.O.- USA Field Hockey is delighted to announce Steve Horgan (Wilmington, DE) has accepted a full-time position as National Umpire Director, effective immediately. In January 2011, Horgan assumed a part-time position with USA Field Hockey as the National Umpire and Technical Manager. In the last year, Horgan has worked to create umpiring consistency through all levels of play and increase the quantity of umpires for both outdoor and indoor field hockey.
“Steve’s role will be considerably more involved than in the past and he will supervise all functions of umpiring from recruiting, education, critique, and over-all administration,” says Executive Director, Steve Locke. “Steve brings years of experience ranging from umpiring at the Olympic level to having the most precise mind of understanding rules within the USA.”
In 2012, USA Field Hockey has placed umpiring a top priority program and is committed to creating initiatives that will increase professionalism, quantity and quality of umpires across the United States.
“Steve’s employment will be step one in that process,” says Locke. “He brings a vast amount of knowledge and experience to the table and will without a doubt be successful in his new role.”
Horgan’s main responsibilities will include expanding the education process and growing the number of USA Field Hockey umpire members to 1,000 by 2013. He will reorganize the Regional Umpire Coordinator system and restore the evaluation process for better ratings and assessments of umpires. In addition, Horgan will be the leader in creating umpire academies throughout the United States that will hopefully introduce new and young umpires to the game.
“I am very excited and honored to be afforded the opportunity to work within the umpire community at this capacity,” says Horgan. “I look to continue my passion, commitment and support of hockey umpires and will work with every division of USA Field Hockey to continue to improve the quality and quantity of umpires across the country.”
Horgan has extensive umpire and technical experience, including involvement in two Olympic Games and two International Hockey Federation (FIH) World Cups, along with 85 International matches. Prior to joining the international ranks, Horgan umpired NCAA, scholastic and club matches. Currently Horgan serves as the Rules Interpreter for both USA Field Hockey and the NCAA.
See you next year ;)
»¦ Ch. G.

Chris Wilson retires international whistle
After the2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Chris Wilson retired his international whistle. Wilson has been an FIH International Umpire for 15 years - including three Pan American Games, two Commonwealth Games and two Junior World Cups - for a grand total of 89 international matches.
Umpiring is truly a family affair for Wilson. Both of Wilson’s parents, sister Jennifer and partner Denise umpired. His mother was the first woman to achieve Canadian rating for both men and women at a time when they were separate programs. Chris’ own umpiring career began at the local level in Victoria, BC – extending to the Vancouver League on the mainland. He went on to become a Grade 1 “Crowned” International Umpire with the FIH in October 1996.
Wilson's contribution to hockey extends well beyond umpiring. He has assumed many roles within the Victoria field hockey community - board member and coach of his sons' teams in the Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association; President of the Vancouver Island Field Hockey Association; coach of several teams in the Vancouver Island Ladies Field Hockey Association; mentor for dozens of umpires, many of whom umpire at the national and international today. Chris continues to umpire locally and is an active player for the Rebels Club, a club founded in his parents' basement 40 years ago.
