Course in New Delhi reaches more than 30 umpires

indeAn Umpiring Course for Indian Umpires was recently held in New Delhi, India in conjunction with the recent Men’s and Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournaments that were staged there.

Four International and 28 National Men’s & Women’s Umpires were in attendance at the course, which was conducted by Italian Ermanno Silvano, the Chairman of the FIH Umpiring Committee.

Silvano commented, “The dedication of these Umpires is great to see and they are very keen to learn. They all contributed to the positive outcome of the course with questions and comments. For some of them it was the first chance to watch hockey at this level and to be briefed on current rules interpretations. Special thanks are due to Shakeel Quraishi and Moghul Muneer for their excellent organisation. Thanks also to Hockey India, for funding the course and investing in the development and growth of their Umpires.’

The Course was held from February 23-26, with the programme including interactive sessions on: -
• The Umpires Briefing, using Dartfish clips to illustrate it
• The role of the Umpire Manager at International Tournaments and the new Umpire Marking System, with the Tournament Women’s Umpire Managers, Sarah Garnett (NZL) and Margaret Hunnaball (GBR)
• Watching games at the Stadium with match review sessions, using logged Dartfish footage
• Presentations from groups of Umpires drawn from the attendees, based upon specific set tasks
• The Video Umpire process, procedures and its use

Certificates were presented to all attendees upon the completion of the course.
